Mamba Mentality

This past Sunday my childhood hero, Lakers legend, the Black Mamba, Kobe Bryant passed away as he was traveling to his daughters’ game. Growing up, seeing how Kobe handled adversity and pressure made me aspire to be him, both as an athlete and entrepreneur. Whether you are an artist, an athlete, real estate agent or brand, building a good business and reliable brand is crucial to the success you will have. This article will discuss the importance on building a better brand and better business with the Mamba Mentality.

If you are reading this and happen to not know what A Brand with Mamba Mentality is, then let me explain. Kobe Bryant stated that Mamba mentality was about more than just basketball.

“Mamba mentality is all about focusing on the process and trusting in the hard work when it matters most,”; “It’s the ultimate mantra for the competitive spirit. It started just as a hashtag that came to me one day, and it’s grown into something athletes — and even non-athletes — embrace as a mindset.”

Knowing this, we can conclude that having the Mamba mentality when developing your brand is a must. Brands must establish themselves with this mindset, hard work, consistency, education and adaptability. It’s not a new idea that if you want to be successful you need to work hard and be consistent. But when it comes to having the Mamba mentality, hard work and consistency should come in the form of out preforming your capabilities. It’s about going above and beyond your competitors. When building a better brand staying consistent is what will build trust from your consumers. Staying consistent for artist makes fans loyal and want to keep digesting your art. This consistency is a direct descendant from the hard work you are putting in.

(Example:) If you see that one of your competitors is crushing it on Instagram posting 3-4 times a day. You should have a mindset that you need to double the amount of relevant posts. Engage with their followers.

It’s easy and cheap to create blog posts, engage on social networks, develop eBooks and other such content assets in the digital age. Kobe stated Mamba mentality is “trusting in the work you’ve put in when it’s time to perform.” At the end of the day you must remember and trust in the work you invested your time in. So ask yourself the next time you need to make that sale, pitch a project, close a deal with new clients; Do I trust my work? Did I invest enough time.

Outside of hard work and consistency, education is a trait that will take you further than you think. As you are developing your brand you must know that educating yourself on all aspects of the field is crucial. If you have studied Kobe or seen interviews you would know that he was highly intelligent. He made it a point to study his craft whatever it be, basketball or business. “Without studying, preparation and practice, you’re leaving the outcome to fate. I don’t do fate.” The worst thing you can do as a brand is not study the field you want to be in. As an artist, athlete or real estate agent you should be studying other artist and real estate agents. Growing your knowledge in how to be successful and seeing what others have done in the past.( See the video at the end of this post)

Lastly the Mamba mentality in business is a mindset that needs to be receptive to change. Adaptability is key to the longevity careers. No one has ever moved forward by standing still. In an interview with two coaching greats Bill Belichick and Nick Saban. Belichick stated that Kobe told his players that “When I was 25, I could go out and score 30 points. When I was 35, 38, I could score 30 but it wasn’t the same way. I had to learn how to move off the ball, I had to learn how to use picks differently. I could still score but I had to change my game.” Kobe had to adapt over time. Even with the transition from basketball to business he was able to hit the ground running which eventually lead to him winning an Oscar. The world of basketball changed vastly over his 20-year span and likewise with any other respective markets. Real Estate changes, marketing changes, art changes. So, as content creators, ambassadors, CEO’s we must be able to adapt to those changes as they come. In order to move forward we must grow and change.

Mamba Mentality Movement inspired many, both on and off the court. Fans everywhere are now using the phrase as motivation. Hopefully you can start taking this mindset to keep pushing forward, never give up, never settle and continue to have a more dominant mindset for years to come!
